Letter of Protest

A letter of protest is a letter that is written to voice your displeasure in regards to a current situation or issue. For example, if your local government was planning on implementing a new tax that you didn’t agree with, you would write them a letter of protest stating why you think it is a bad idea. If enough letters of protest are received, a decision can usually be overturned.

Tips for writing a letter of protest

-          Be polite: don’t just insult the decision; give valid reasons as to why you oppose the decision. If you just blindly criticize the issue, your opinion will be ignored.

Dear Counselor Mathis

I am writing this letter to protest the recent decision the city council made about raising the taxes on all non-recyclable water bottles manufactured within the township.

I truly think this is a bad idea. Water bottle production is one of the economic powerhouses in this region, and if we place a tax on it, water bottle manufacturing companies may decide to relocate, leaving many locals out of jobs.

Please reconsider your decision and the effects it will have on the local population.

Sincerely,

A concerned citizen
