A letter of assurance is a letter that is sent to assure the receiver of something specific. For example, when you are applying to university, you may receive a letter of assurance stating that the university received all the required documents to process your application. If you purchase a firearm, you may be required to sign a letter of assurance stating that you will not transfer or sell the firearm to anyone who does not possess a valid license.

Dear Margie,
We are pleased to inform you that the University of Miami has received all the required documentation to make an admissions decision for the fall term of 2009.
While we have not actually begun reviewing applications yet, we just wanted to verify with you the fact that we received your completed application, 2 references, 1 essay, and 1 teacher recommendation. These are all the documents we require for consideration to admission in our school of Art’s and Science.
We hope to have final decisions out before the end of the month. Once again, thank you for applying to the University of Miami!
